Research: Collateral Remake.

Research: Collateral remake information

Remake of 'Collateral'

Information

We created a short remake of the crime thriller film 'Collateral'. Collateral is a 2004 American film, which is directed by Michael Mann. It starts Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx. The film was set in Los Angeles, California. It is based around a taxi driver who finds himself the hostage of a contract killer. The film was distributed by Dream Works US and Paramount Pictures. It was released on August 6th 2004. It had a budget of 56 million dollars.

Our remake of the film included 4 characters, it was filmed in a college setting. We used a JVC video camera, and a tripod. We re-inacted the first scene when Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx are walking through a train station, by having two characters walk across the scene, whilst the main character walked towards the camera, and the camera was focused on him. The two extra characters help create a similar busy and hectic atmosphere of a train station. Another way we recreated the film was through mise en scene, particularly the props. For example, instead of using the same briefcases which were used in the film, we used two bags which belonged to college students.

Towards the end of the film, the two main characters drop their brief cases and when they go to pick them up, they swap. We made this seem significant by using a close up camera shot. We zoomed in to the bags once they had hit the floor.  We also zoomed in to the bags when the characters picked them up, to make it clear they picked up the wrong ones.

we used Final Cut Pro to add effects to the clip. For example; fade the clip in at the beginning, and fade it out at the end. We also cut the clips we didn't need, and put the remaining clips in the right order. We also added a non-diagetic soundtrack to the clip, which played from beginning of the clip to the end. We had no dialogue in the clip.

Research: 5 shots.

 Different shot types:

This is a low angle shot, and pan from right to left of someones feet.

This is also a shot of someones feet. This shot is a close up of the persons feet and it pans from right to left.

This is a wide shot.

This is a rule of thirds shot, the person your see is in 2/3 of the shot and the persons shoulder your looking over is 1/3 of the shot. This shot follows the rules of the thrids shot.

This is a shot of someone standing infront of a window. There are lighting issues with filming someone infront of a window, for example the reflection of the camera and camera man can be caught in the shot.

What are the conventions of film openings?

in the opening of a film, the film is usually introduced. The film openings also introduce the production and distribution company's logos. nowadays (because it never did this in the past) film openings  usually introduce  the names of the stars of the film. Shortly after this, the ilm usually introduces the main protagonist/character.
The key locations are usually usually shown, and by this, it means that the viwer ges a taste of where the film is going to be priarily set. film openings usually have music to help set the tone/mood. The mood of the film is usually established at this point. for a thrller, the opening usually needs to have some sort of suspense.
