Foley sounds
What is a foley sound?
A foley sound is the process of putting a pre-recorded sound in sync with the image shown on the screen, to make it seem as if the sound which has been made by a hj is being made as the movement on the screen is. When you hear a sound on a film or program, which is being caused by a humans action, it is usually a foley sound.
This is an example I have taken from a documentary about foley sounds. This image shows somebody taking steps on a piece of wood to create the sound of someone walking. This is recorded and will be used, when an actor is being filmed walking.
In this scene from a film, the actor who is walking will walk, whilst a foley sound which has previously been made will be played to sound like the actor is creating the footsteps with his own feet. A foley sound is helpful here as the actor is too far away from the camera to be able to hear his footsteps clearly.
When the actor is knocking on the door, a pre-recorded foley sound is used to create the knocking sound, rather than the actor at the time.
